A Perfect Day Among the Vines: Three Eugene-Area Wineries Worth Discovering

The hills just west of Eugene are quietly home to some of the most charming winery experiences in the Willamette Valley. On a recent tour through the South Willamette Valley wine corridor, we visited three very different but equally compelling destinations: Sweet Cheeks, Hinman Vineyards, and Sarver. Whether you're planning a romantic afternoon, a special event, or a lively Friday evening out, this stretch of Briggs Hill Road and the surrounding hills has something for everyone.
Sweet Cheeks Winery: Vineyard Elegance on the Hill
If you've ever imagined what a quintessential Oregon winery should look like, Sweet Cheeks probably already exists in your mind. Tucked into a rolling hillside in Crow, just west of Eugene, the estate is nothing short of stunning — koi ponds, water features, climbing roses, and sweeping views of the surrounding valley greet you from the moment you arrive. There's both covered patio and indoor seating, so the views are yours to enjoy in any weather.
The winery has deep roots here. Founder Dan Smith planted his first vines on this hillside in the late 1970s, spending years farming the land and supplying grapes to other local producers before opening the tasting room in 2005 in a historic building he had relocated onto the property. That DIY spirit is still very much alive — and it shows in the wines.
What sets Sweet Cheeks apart from many local wineries is the breadth of their portfolio. In addition to estate-grown fruit, they source grapes from select partner vineyards throughout Oregon, which means you'll often find varietals here that aren't commonly available in this part of the state — including Cabernet Sauvignon, which tends to require the warmer growing conditions found elsewhere in Oregon. The result is a wine list that feels expansive and a little surprising for a hillside tasting room outside Eugene.
The servers are genuinely knowledgeable and passionate about what's in the glass, making recommendations with confidence and enthusiasm. Charcuterie and small plates are available to pair with your flight, and the kitchen facilities make Sweet Cheeks a popular venue for weddings and private events. If you're considering the property for a celebration, it's easy to see why — few venues in the region offer this combination of natural beauty, professional infrastructure, and wine that's actually worth drinking. Reservations are encouraged, especially on weekends.

Hinman Vineyards: A Full-Circle Homecoming

If the wine world has a feel-good story of the year, it might belong to Hinman Vineyards. This spring, after more than 30 years away, founder Doyle Hinman and his family reacquired what was once known as Silvan Ridge Winery and restored the property to its original name — and its original vision.
The history here runs deep. Doyle Hinman planted his first grapevines on this South Willamette Valley property in 1972, at a time when Oregon wine was still largely unknown to the wider world. He went on to found Hinman Vineyards in 1979, making it Eugene's first bonded winery. The estate grew to be one of the largest wineries in the state by the late 1980s before being sold in 1993. The Chambers family stewarded the land for over three decades as Silvan Ridge, and now — in a rare family-to-family transition — it has returned home.
Walking the property today, you feel that history. There's a character to the place that newer wineries can't replicate: the established vines, the mature landscaping, the sense that many hands have worked and loved this land over many decades. The Hinman family is currently in the process of refurbishing and reimagining the estate, and there's a genuine excitement in the air about what comes next.
The wines themselves are worth the trip in their own right. The portfolio spans from Willamette Valley Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris to some genuinely distinctive offerings — including a chardonnay with unexpected notes of banana that's unlike anything else in the region, and their beloved Early Muscat, a semi-sparkling, lightly sweet wine that longtime fans will be thrilled to find again under the Hinman name. Customer service was exceptional on our visit — warm, unhurried, and clearly proud of what this place represents.

Sarver Winery: Where the Party Starts at Dusk

Some wineries are beautiful. Some have great wine. Sarver manages to be both while also being the most fun you can have on a hillside on a Friday night.
Located on Mayola Lane about 20 minutes from downtown Eugene, Sarver sits atop a ridge with some of the most expansive views in the area — on a clear day, you can see the Eugene valley, Fern Ridge Reservoir, and even the Three Sisters mountains in the distance. The vibe here is decidedly unpretentious. No formal tastings, no reservations required, no dress code implied. Just great wine, stunning scenery, and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere.
The winery is open until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, making it the natural final stop on a day spent exploring the area. Penelope, the wood-fired pizza truck, fires up on Friday evenings and runs all weekend — and the pies are exactly what you want after a day of tasting. Charcuterie is also available. Live music is a regular feature, with local and regional acts performing on the outdoor patio stage most weekends, drawing a crowd that brings their own camping chairs, settles into the Adirondack chairs around the fire pits, or finds a spot at one of the many picnic tables scattered across the grounds. On a busy Friday night — especially when there's music — it's worth bringing your own seating if you want to get comfortable for the long haul. There's also indoor seating with couches and chairs if the evening gets cool.
The wine lineup is the real anchor. Sarver specializes in small-batch, handcrafted wines and offers a wide variety that includes estate-grown Pinot Noir alongside bolder reds sourced from warmer Oregon growing regions. The pricing is notably approachable — and the quality punches well above what you'd expect at these price points. Beer is available too, which means the designated driver in your group doesn't have to feel left out.
Family-friendly, dog-friendly, and genuinely good-spirited, Sarver is the kind of place that turns a day trip into a full evening without you quite realizing it.
